On the thought-provoking topic: “What can youth with religious backgrounds offer British society?” the Harrow Branch of WFWP held a ‘Women’s Forum’ in the meeting room at Harrow Volunteer Centre from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, 4th October
The executive chair of the Somali Family Support Group, Mrs. Hanan Ibrahim assisted us in holding this forum, which has become ‘the beginning’ of a collaboration between the parents’ generation (of mothers) and the young generation (of daughters).
Amongst the 30 women who participated from the local area, we could count several sets of mother and daughter(s), nearly half of the participants being teenagers (8 were from the FFWPU). In her opening remarks, MC Taeko Duckworth stressed the responsibility that women of her age - The parents’ generation- have in nurturing their children about how they can learn and practice and gain confidence in their faith. She encouraged the audience to share their thoughts and Feelings on this occasion, through which they could perhaps gain some insights concerning the burning question, “Is our faith potent enough to resolve social problems
Five speakers from different religious backgrounds spoke in total: Rosanna O’Connell from the FFWPU, Juliet Goddard as a Christian, Rimla Akhtar from the Muslim faith Punita Perinjasaja, representing Hinduism m & Hanan Ibrahim from the Somali Family Support Group -talked about the contributions and challenges of a young woman of faith in modern-day Britain, which was followed by a brief Question & Answer session and small group discussions.
Despite the inconvenience of it being a Sunday evening, and the absence of two speakers, the meeting went well finally closing at its high point after the group discussions. Every participant spoke up eagerly about the issues which were then reported back to the whole assembly at the end.
I n her closing remarks, Agneta Marsh, the Harrow Representative of WFWP, introduced the on-going projects of Harrow WFWP, such as the Coffee morning programme, Pilgrimages to local places of worship, Bridge of Peace ceremony, and the Peace Tapestry.
After the programme ended, refreshments were served, courtesy of the WFWP staff, particularly Chiyo Le Bas who prepared many snacks and drinks for everyone to enjoy. By the end, the participants could feel much closer to each other, exchanging their email addresses and telephone numbers for further contact.
The next forum has already been booked for Saturday, 16th January 2010, until which time we will organize various occasions bringing young & old women of faith together for some encouraging events.
